To my new readers, I’d like to officially welcome you to Letters We Send Friends! Thank you for being here. Your support means the world to me!
I’m writing this letter as we’re coming out of a record-breaking heatwave in the Bay Area — because nothing says ‘October’ quite like high summer, right? While my favorite knits and jackets are still enjoying their extended vacation in the back of my closet, I’ve been daydreaming about the cold weather outfits I’m excited to rewear this season.
In recent years, I’ve focused on slowly building my wardrobe MVPs — those high-quality staples I know I’ll want to reach for year after year. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy exploring seasonal trends that align with my style, but these trusty pieces are my fail-safe for those mornings when outfit inspiration seems to have taken the day off.
I’ve come to love the flexibility of dressing based on my mood or the day’s vibe. Sometimes you wake up feeling bold and put-together, other times you’re all about comfort and ease. Having a well-curated wardrobe means being ready for whatever the day (or my mood) might throw my way. It’s never too late to start building your own lineup of wardrobe MVPs. I hope this letter sparks some ideas on key pieces that make sense for you and your life — after all, the goal is to make getting dressed a breeze every day.
1. Leather Jacket
We’re starting off strong with the MVP of MVPs in my fall wardrobe: the leather jacket. It’s my go-to piece for instantly elevating any outfit with that effortless, cool-girl vibe. I love throwing on a leather jacket to balance out feminine pieces like a slip dress or a maxi skirt.
Over the years, I’ve test-driven various styles, but I’ve found my sweet spot with an oversized, aviator-style jacket. It’s got that perfect blend of comfort and edge that just works for me. In fact, my favorite leather jacket is a men’s style I snagged on eBay for just $80!
The best shopping hack I’ve learned this past year is going for pre-owned or vintage leather and suede pieces. In my book, a leather jacket hits its stride when it’s got that perfectly worn-in look and feel. Buying vintage fast-tracks you to that coveted lived-in coolness. And let’s be real — it’s easier on both the planet and your wallet. My eBay find is living proof!
So if you’re in the market for a leather (or suede) jacket, consider giving a pre-loved piece a new home. If you still have hesitations about trying the second-hand market for a leather piece, might I suggest slow fashion labels like Worn Vintage? This Stockholm-based brand uses carefully sourced vintage and deadstock materials for their pieces. Check out my picks below.
2. Trench Coat
Onto the Swiss Army knife of outerwear: the trench coat. It’s versatile, practical, and always manages to look polished. I’ve found that a well-fitting trench can take you from rushed morning coffee runs to impromptu evening drinks without missing a beat.
I have two favorites: a flowy oversized beige number and a yummy chocolate brown double-breasted style. Both pieces have the right blend of structure and flow, making them ideal for layering over anything from a sleek date night ensemble to my comfiest weekend sweats.
Belt it tight for a more polished look, or leave it open for an effortless vibe. I usually tie the belt in the back to keep it out of the way when I’m wearing it open. Another trench styling trick I swear by is replacing the attached belt with my own, as seen above — my Mango trench cinched with a vintage Gucci belt. Shop my trench coat picks below.
3. Knitwear
Soft, snuggly knits are the backbone of my cold-weather wardrobe, and for good reason. My absolute faves are cashmere and merino wool — they’re like a warm hug for your body, but oh so chic.
There’s something special about slipping into a buttery-soft cashmere sweater or a perfectly draped merino wool cardigan. They’re lightweight yet warm, breathable yet cozy, and they have this uncanny ability to make you look put-together even when you’ve just rolled out of bed. I’ve built up a collection of these in various neutral shades — think ecru, navy, brown, black, and soft greys — that play nice with pretty much everything else in my closet.
Wearing cashmere and merino wool pieces do require a bit of TLC to stay looking their best. Caring for knits doesn’t have to be a chore — they just need a gentle touch to stay in prime condition.
Hand-wash in cool water with a mild detergent. Skip the wringing — gently squeeze out water and lay flat to dry. Between wears, give them a day’s rest to keep their shape, and always fold rather than hang.
Pilling is inevitable, but don’t despair. Invest in a sweater stone or a small fabric shaver to keep your knits looking fresh. Just be gentle — we’re aiming for smooth, not threadbare. For storage, especially off-season, use airtight containers with cedar blocks to ward off moths.
4. Blazer
The classic blazer — sleek, sophisticated, and always ready for action. I’ve had my go-to’s for years, and let me tell you, they’ve been a lifesaver more times than I can count.
What I love about a good blazer is its chameleon-like ability to adapt to any situation. Throw it over a silk blouse and you’re boardroom-ready. Pair it with your favorite graphic tee and slouchy jeans for Sunday brunch with friends. It’s even saved many a last-minute date night outfit.
The key is finding one with the right fit that works for you. I prefer mine slightly oversized for that borrowed-from-the-boys look. It’s got structure in the shoulders, nips in just enough at the waist, and has pockets deep enough for more than just lip gloss.
Lately, I’ve been loving the collarless, cinched styles paired with everything from jeans to my favorite capris.
5. Denim
The true workhorse of any wardrobe. I’ve tried them all — from skinny to wide-leg, high-rise to low-rise. I’m all about the slouchy, wide-leg styles these days, but if we’re talking denim soulmates, it’ll always be the high-waisted, straight-leg silhouette. They’re comfortable enough for all-day wear, and they play nice with everything from sneakers to heels.
Go easy on washing your jeans — once every 10 wears max. This maintains the fit and prevents too much ‘rebound.’ If you get a stain, just spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Washing cold with your jeans turned inside-out helps retain that rich indigo color. And always air dry to avoid shrinking or warping. You can also toss your jeans in the freezer!
6. Loafers
These classic slip-ons instantly upgrade any outfit with a refined, borrowed-from-the-boys vibe. In recent years, I’ve found myself reaching for them more than my favorite sneakers — just as comfy, but with an extra dose of polish. Opt for real leather, suede or patent finishes to get your money’s worth. Pre-owned leather loafers are a great option as well since you won’t need to break them in!
The key is finding a pair with the right balance of structure and softness. My ultimate faves are the Elba loafers from Freda Salvador (runs TTS, very structured but so comfy once broken in), Le Loafer from Saint Laurent (size up a half inch, a little less structured than the Elba’s with no break-in period), and the penny loafers from Jamie Haller (runs TTS, softest of them all). I can confidently attest to the comfortability of all three pairs!
Have a little bit of fun wearing loafers by playing with contrast — I love pairing mine with cropped trousers or jeans for a classic look, or with a floaty midi dress for some unexpected edge. If you’re up for it, try them with socks when the temperature drops — it’s equal parts practical and stylish!
7. Boots
Investing in a pair of high quality boots might be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make for your wardrobe. These dependable staples aren’t just about style; with proper care, they’ll be your loyal soles for years to come.
My go-to pair is a brown suede ankle boot with a kitten heel, but regardless of style, the key to longevity is maintenance. First rule of boot club: invest in a good waterproofing spray. Apply it before the first wear and reapply every few months. It’s like an invisible shield against the elements.
After each wear, wipe off dirt and salt stains — they’re leather’s worst enemies. For deeper cleaning, use a soft brush and leather cleaner, followed by a conditioner to keep the leather supple. Don’t neglect the soles; a cobbler can resole them when worn, giving your boots a new lease on life.
Storage is also key: use boot trees or stuffed paper to maintain shape, and never store them damp. With a little maintenance, your favorite boots can weather many seasons, becoming old friends that just get better with time.
What are your wardrobe MVPs for fall/winter? I’d love to know! Drop me a comment or tap that heart icon if this letter resonated with you.
