jeans and a cute top? groundbreaking. five fresh ideas on how to update this classic outfit recipe.
Styling S.O.S. is a series dedicated to solving everyday style challenges. This monthly dispatch provides creative, no-fuss solutions to your fashion woes — from those I-have-nothing-to-wear moments to switching up your seasonal wardrobe, or just wanting to freshen up your everyday looks. No dilemma is too big or too small — let's make getting dressed the easiest part of your day!
When was the last time you felt a thrill putting on a-nice-top-and-jeans combo?
Yeah…me too. It got me wondering — where have all those “nice tops” vanished to? I can’t pinpoint the exact moment, but somehow over the past few years, cute tops and blouses seem to have quietly slipped out of my wardrobe rotation. I’m still trying to wrap my head around how and why that shift occurred…
But this season, I can’t help but notice this undeniable feminine energy in the air, and it’s all coming from two major trends: boho and ladylike dressing. At face value, you might think these styles are complete opposites, but they’ve found common ground in one key piece — the blouse.
Chemena Kamali has undoubtedly put the blouse back in the spotlight. In her debut as Chloé’s Creative Director, this iconic garment was the cornerstone of her collection. Kamali continued to emphasize the blouse’s importance in her sophomore collection, showcasing its versatility through various interpretations. We saw diaphanous tops crafted from delicate guipure lace, as well as voluminous baby doll silhouettes in silk charmeuse, paired with matching bloomers and flowing skirts.
While Kamali’s collection championed a fresh take on boho chic, there’s also a noticeable trend towards refined elegance with subtle vintage influences. This was particularly evident in the FW’24 collections from Prada, Khaite, and Dries Van Noten.
The blouse’s revival spans these diverse style directions and solidifying its status as a key piece for the coming seasons. At NYFW, Alaïa and Toteme took the lead, presenting refined interpretations of this quintessential garment for SS’25. We saw elegant pieces crafted from sculptural poplin, voluminous silk taffeta, and delicate silk georgette. I love observing how this single item of clothing can seamlessly transition between free-spirited boho and a more polished, sophisticated aesthetic.
The versatility of the blouse allows it to serve as a chameleon in our wardrobes, effortlessly adapting to various style POVs and occasions. Whether you’re aiming for a relaxed, bohemian vibe or a more elegant, put-together look, the revived blouse seems poised to become the versatile MVP of our closets once again.
Now onto the looks!
Five fresh ways to wear the nice-top-and-jeans combo
Style notes: If your trusty oxford has been working overtime, give it a well-deserved break (and maybe a spa day at the dry cleaners.) Instead, reach for a silky button-up — I’m obsessed with this striped silk top Frame sent me, and now I want it in other colors. Leave the shirt untucked over wide-leg jeans, with just a hint of pointed toe peeking out. It gives you that put-together-but-not-fussy vibe that works for so many occasions.
As far as color combos, navy and burgundy are always a winning duo in my book — bonus points if you play with different textures. A suede tote paired with patent leather pumps brings depth to your outfit without trying too hard. If you want to take texture play to the next level, tie a burgundy knit over the shoulders to round out the look.
Style notes: These LouLou studio jeans are a real winner — they’ve got that perfect high-waisted fit with a straight leg that tapers just a touch at the bottom. If you’re hesitant to try the barrel jean trend, this could be a good alt for you. The muted olive Toteme top (on sale!) pairs nicely with that faded blue wash and classic stitching. Tuck it in and cinch with a croc embossed belt for a touch of texture.
The Le Monde Beryl patent leather Mary Janes brighten up the outfit, while the oxblood shoulder bag provide some depth. Olive and oxblood is a hot combo this season — I need to recreate this look stat.
Style notes: This look is a lesson in proportions: voluminous top + sleek bottom = well-balanced outfit. And vice versa. But it’s not a rule — I’ve seen some incredible looks that played with big + big (a la Chloé runway) that just works. If you want to emulate the Chloé girl, swap the straight-leg denim with a wide-leg style, and slip on some chunky platforms.
I really love the fit of the Khaite Abigail jeans as a 5’3” gal. The inseam hits at the ideal spot just slightly below my ankle — which means kitten sling-backs, square-toe boots, and round ballet flats are all fair game.
This outfit recipe is one of my go-to’s, something I’d easily wear out to dinner on a Friday night (I’d likely be that overdressed person at a SF joint.) A statement top paired with classic denim, finished with interesting shoes + bold accessories — chef’s kiss.
Style notes: This outfit is a perfect blend of boho charm and polished elegance. The Rixo lace top is bringing all the free-spirited vibes, while the Slvrlake jeans keep things cool and casual. The pointed slingbacks and the structured Savette bag add a touch of sophistication that takes this look to the next level.
Let’s talk accessories for a sec. The Agmes earrings are like the best of both worlds — a little bit boho, a little bit glam. And the Saint Laurent sunnies add just the right amount of edge.
This look proves you can have the best of both worlds — it’s a versatile ensemble that easily transitions from day to night, striking that ideal balance between relaxed and polished.
Style notes: Denim-on-denim can be far from basic — the key is in the mix of textures, washes, and those carefully chosen accessories that elevate the entire look.
The Suzi Kondi top — with its dramatic but not overwhelming puff sleeves and gathered neckline — brings a romantic, almost Victorian flair to the look. Paired with the Citizen’s straight-leg jeans in a lighter wash, it creates a chic contrast while keeping the denim theme cohesive.
What really makes this outfit pop are the unexpected accessories. The burgundy Aeyde heels add a bold splash of color and sophistication. The white bucket bag introduces a crisp, modern element that balances the vintage vibe of the denim.
The Chimi sunglasses and the beaded necklace from rooni add just the right touch of femininity and warmth. They soften the look without competing with the statement denim pieces.
I’d wear this look to everything — from weekend brunches to casual Fridays at the office wine bar.
By the way, I added a few other nice tops and denim options in a ShopMy collection in case you need more ideas.
